In the framework of the "Vietnam Forests and Deltas" (VFD) project, SRD held a training session on climate-smart agriculture for representatives from 6 districts (including Giao Thuy, Hai Hau, Nghia Hung, Truc Ninh, Nam Truc and Y Yen) of Nam Dinh province. The training took place from 11th to 13th August 2015 in the town of Quat Lam in Giao Thuy district of Nam Dinh province. The aim of the session was to improve knowledge of climate-smart rice cultivation, as well as climate change.
There were 31 attendees at the training, which included representatives of the Agricultural Extension of Nam Dinh province, the Agricultural Sub-department, the Plant Protection Station, and the Agricultural Extension from the district and local level.
Trainers of the session were experts in agriculture and climate smart agriculture (CSA) from SRD, who helped participants raise awareness of climate change through topic such as: evidence and impacts of climate change, impacts of climate change on agriculture generally, and on rice cultivation specifically in Giao Thuy, Nghia Hung and Hai Hau districts; and the influences of rice cultivation on climate change in the context of food security. At the same time, participants were taught about CSA including its necessity, elements, and models that have been implemented by SRD such as system rice intensification (SRI) and closed-loop agricultural system.
The participants discuss the training contents
Both trainers and participants thoroughly shared and discussed the critique of CSA and steps to choose a sustainable model for CSA, which are as follows:
1. Soil and its management
2. Water management
3. Breeding and biodiversity management
4. Renewable energy management in agriculture
5. Agricultural waste management
6. Climate-smart livestock
7. Management of the economic efficiency of the model
8. New agricultural technologies that consume less fossil fuels
9. Agricultural hydrology management
10. Agroforestry management, and using the Garden-Pond-Pigsty model
11. Community development in agricultural development
Based on the critique, some models for rice cultivation that are being implemented in Nam Dinh were discussed and analyzed to determine what requirements of CSA that they have achieved or have not achieved. Besides this, solutions and plans were offered to address the requirements that models have not achieved.
SRD held a variety of training sessions on climate smart agriculture In the framework of the VFD program, SRD held three training sessions on CSA in Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces from May to August 2015. At district level, SRD organized 06 training sessions in Ky Son, Que Phong, Tuong Duong and Nam Dan districts of Nghe An province and in Ba Thuoc, Thuong Xuan districts. In addition, there was an additional training for farmers that are implementing the climate-smart rice cultivation model. It is expected that SRD will hold one CSA training at the provincial level in Long An and ten training sessions at the district level (2 sessions in Nghe An province , 3 sessions in Thanh Hoa province , 2 sessions in Nam Dinh province and 1 sessions in Long An province). After the training sessions, SRD will continue to support the provinces to implement the model for CSA and cooperate with Agricultural Extension at the community, district and provincial level to monitor households in practice. |
