Under a series of training courses under the project "Capacity Building on Climate Change for Civil Society Organizations" funded by the Embassy of Finland, a training course on Gender and Climate Change was held in Hanoi from September 25 to 27, 2011. The training workshop was attended by regular participants from different civil society organizations, research institutes and universities who had attended a number of previous training courses under the project. In addition, there were several new faces attending the project's workshop for the first time. Duong Thi Tinh from a local NGO in Ha Giang Province commented, "This is the first time I have attended a training course on climate change. The knowledge that I have gained is of great use to me and other participants in support of local community in responding to climate change."
Group discussion
Given that climate change can have different impacts on men and women and can worsen gender inequality, this training course focused on clarifying the current gender situations, gender prejudice and types of gender inequality in the context of climate change. The trainer shared certain gender analysis tools and analyzed vulnerability of natural resources and gender integration into development projects. Although gender issues are quite new to trainees, learner-centered method and group discussion helped trainees acquire new knowledge in a clear manner and share with one another their experiences.
