As the rainy season approaches, many regions of Thua Thien Hue province will be heavily affected by floods, typhoons and other natural disasters. In preparation for this time of year, on September 23rd, 2011, SRD provided the rapid response teams of two coastal communes in the Huong Tra district - Huong Phong and Hai Duong - with rescue means as part of the "Community Based Disaster Risk Mitigation and Climate Change Adaptation" project. These items included risk maps, white boards for preparedness plans, life savers, megaphones, rope, mobile boats, anchors, flashlights, rain gear, life jackets, helmets and accident insurance.
Rescue equipment ready to be delivered to the Huong Phong commune.
Along with the training the Rapid Response Teams (RRT) received previously, the equipment will help these teams further increase their capacity to respond to disasters. The RRT of both communes were very pleased to receive the rescue equipment and seemed very eager to help their village members if needed. "We are very excited to receive these rescue means and commit ourselves in using them to protect our community against natural disaster," said Mr. Nguyen Duy Tiem, head of Van Quat Dong village in the Huong Phong commune, “We are sure that with these means we will be able to accomplish our duties as RRT members."
As a pilot project, this experience is new to many. "This is the first time we have received a full package of rescue means for the RRT at the village level and support from such a project led by SRD," said Mr. Nguyen Liem, chairman of the Hai Duong People's Committee, "We are happy, appreciative and strongly hope SRD can give further support to the remaining villages in our commune in the future." This is surely the intent of SRD after the completion of this pilot project in 2014 and the adaptive livelihood models are explored further in the context of these communes to better assist in their adaptation to climate change.
