Under the project “Vietnam Forests and Deltas” (VFD), SRD and the VFD Project Management Board co-organized a three day training workshop titled “Developing climate smart agriculture” for agricultural officials at provincial and district levels in Nam Dinh from 19-21 May 2015.
The workshop was designed to meet the local demand for defining the criteria to select, implement and replicate the livelihood models of climate smart agriculture.
Based on profound knowledge and experience gained over the past years in supporting communities to develop sustainable livelihood models, agriculture experts in the Sustainable Agriculture Department of SRD designed a training workshop in which the knowledge and experience of 28 participants (officials of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Department of Agricultural Extension from Giao Thuy, Hai Hau and Nghia Hung districts; representatives from the Women’s Union, the Farmer’s Union in Nam Dinh province) were all mobilized. Linkages between the presentations and discussions were made during the workshop.
Alongside the trainers from SRD, two representatives from (VIFEP) and the Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) participated by giving presentations during the workshop. Different livelihood models implemented by VIFEP and MCD in the Red River Delta and neighboring areas were presented by the guests, enriching the workshop more effectively.
After the workshop, the trained knowledge and skills will be applied to the real activities, most notably in 3 smart agriculture models (i.e. the white-leg shrimp model, the potato cultivation model and the high quality rice cultivation model) which are being supported by VFD in Nam Dinh province.
Long term, selected members of the workshop will be invited to cooperate with VFD’s Management board to implement similar trainings for agriculture officials in the project’s districts and communes.
***Climate-smart agriculture is a way to achieve short-and-long-term agricultural development priorities in the face of climate change and serves as a bridge to other development priorities. (source: http://csa2015.cirad.fr/)
