A Greener Environment

Nowadays, waste dumping and other forms of environmental contamination are rampant in rural areas, a trend that can largely be attributed to poor living conditions of locals, as well as a lack of awareness of the causes. To tackle this predicament, a project called "Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation," in which Caritas Australia funded the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD). On 30th June, 2012, SRD will collaborate with the People's Committee in Huong Tra Town in the province of Hue to implement a communication campaign on garbage treatment and environmental protection in the two communes of Huong Phong and Hai Duong.

Garbage is commonly discarded on the estuaries and lagoons of Thuan An, where it is home to many aqua-cultural farming. The result is water pollution and the destruction of the areas’ natural beauty.

The campaign encourages the collection and proper disposal of garbage and waste which was conducted in Huong Phong Market in Hai Duong Commune. With the participation of the young people in the town, they collected water hyacinth from the rivers in the area.

To further spread awareness, a camouflage contest was held in which the participating youth would design and create their own clothes using waste materials. This would help bring a significant message to all to end environmental pollution. Many locals took notice of this strange contest and have begun to understand the importance of utilizing waste materials with cleaner and greener methods.
