Women and Communication

More than 100 farmers in the Central Vietnamese province of Thua Thien Hue recently gathered for a musical event that integrated vital communication about preparing and responding to natural disasters and climate change in the region.

The event - held on the 2nd August 2012 - was conducted as part of SRD's "Community Based Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction" project. It was coordinated in collaboration with the Women's Union of Huong Phong commune, and was attended by nearly 80 female members of the local Women's Union, 10 male members of Farmers Union of Thanh Phuong village, along with representatives from the commune People's Committee, village officers, Youth Union and the local people.

The information about disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change was conveyed to the audience through a question following up each performance. The event created a relaxed atmosphere in which the audience could easily absorb the information and develop a deeper understanding of the changes in local climate as well as how to prevent and respond to natural disasters in the region.

The event also aimed at strengthening the voice and capacity of local women in DRR and climate change adaptation. Despite playing an important role in disaster prevention and climate change communication in particular, and daily life in general, women in the region have typically had few opportunities to participate in disaster prevention training courses which help increase their knowledge and skills. The event successfully highlighted the meaning of community based DRR and CCA, as well as the role and capacity of women in this aspect.
