The first workshop on the Model of restoring local rice variety in 2021

The Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) cooperated with the Sub-department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Son La province, the People's Committee of Thuan Chau district, the People's Committee of Nam Lau commune in Bien village, Nam Lau commune (Thuan Chau) held a workshop on the Model of restoring local rice variety for the crop this year on the morning of November 10th2021. Attending the workshop, there were leaders, project managers and project staff from the SRD Center, leaders of the Provincial Sub-Department of Plant Protection and Protection, representatives of the Commune People's Committee, students of the rehabilitation class and farmers in neighboring villages.




In the framework of the project  Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in the agricultural and forestry sector of the north-western highlands", the model of restoring the Chien rice variety has been implemented since July 2021 withthe aim of conserving and developing the local rice variety, ensuring food security, implementing production methods to respond to climate change.




The model is performed with the method of “negative selection” and “positive selection” to select and create the super-bred and purebred Chien sticky rice lines after at least 3 years of implementation. The process of implementing the above two methods is based on climate-adapted rice cultivation (CAR) with the emphasis on using indigenous rice varieties, using composted manure, microbial organic fertilizers, and planting sparsely, using biological pesticides to spray and only spraying when really necessary.... This is a sustainable production method that plays an important role in environmental protection while bringing high economic efficiency to farmers, increasing beneficial microorganisms in the soil, and helping to improve the soil. , protect the ecological environment of the fields (increasing the number of natural enemies), long-term environmental protection. In addition, the restoration through the above method also helps the rice plant to grow healthy / hardy, strengthen its resistance to pests and diseases, to adverse weather conditions, and adapt to climate changes.





After the first crop was implemented, the initial results of the model have contributed to reducing input costs compared to traditional farming methods, such as: the amount of seed reduced by 80%, the amount of fertilizer by 10%, the amount of fertilizer that was reduced by 10%. plant protection drugs reduced by 60%, yield increased by about 10%. More specifically, after harvesting, in the model field, 150 promising rice plants with the most purebred characteristics will be selected to continue performing the rehabilitation experiments for the second year.






During the workshop, Ms. Hoang Thi Anh shared that the results of this model far exceeded the initial expectations and doubts of people in Nam Lau commune (afraid of not being harvested because of 1 stem transplant, sparse transplant, no chemical spraying, no chemical fertilizers...). In addition, SRD Center staff discussed, analyzed, and answered questions to help people gain more knowledge, motivation and confidence to be able to continue implementing the restoration model in the second and third years of the project.
