----------
In Hanoi, On May 20, 2021, the activity “Identifying environmental and social issues of enterprises, wood manufacturing, processing and industry; and providing policy recommendations to improve the ability to meet the provisions of the EVFTA on timber production and supply chains in Vietnam” within the framework of the project “Promoting forest governance and legal timber trade through the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) – VM066” was launched. The project is implemented in 03 provinces, namely Phu Tho, Binh Dinh and from May 1, 2021 to August 31, 2021. The project, which is managed by the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), and assigned to a Third Party – Implementation Institute, is carried out by the Research Institute for Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Certification (SFMI) with funding from the EU.
The project aiming at studying environmental and social issues of enterprises, wood manufacturing, processing and trading industry is implemented in 03 provinces and cities. These areas often attract the operation of many small and medium-sized wood manufacturing, trading and processing enterprises.
The project was researched and approved for funding in the context of Vietnam has ratified the EVFTA and other agreements. This has brought great opportunities for the wood processing industry to access to the largest and most potential markets with great preferential conditions. In turn, Vietnam was required to implement environmental and social mechanisms and policies to meet environmental and social regulations of the EVFTA and VPA/FLEGT. Because of the fact that the Agreement enters into force on August 1, 2020 and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, so far there have been no studies evaluating the implementation of environmental and social issues of wood manufacturing, processing and trading enterprises.
The workshop attracted the participation of delegates from the Institute of Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Management and Forest Certification, the Vietnam Institute Forest Association, the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, the Forest Owners Association, relevant agencies and press agencies. It is expected that the activities would be carried out in June and the processing, analysis and research reports would be completed in July: Internal Workshop and Report Workshop to SRD would be implemented in early August according to the project’s regulations.
