TRAINING WORKSHOP ON PROTECTION OF CHILDREN
FROM SEXUAL ABUSE AND SUGGESTIONS FOR SELF-PROTECTION
"Timely, realistic and practical" is what Mrs. NTH, the head of parents group having children with disabilities in Trung Hai commune shared after attending the Training Workshop on "Protection of children from sexual abuse and suggestions for self-protection" which took place on April 9th, 2019 in Gio Hai commune, Gio Linh district.
According to the United Nations Children's Fund's report, "One in four girls in the world is abused and this rate is 1/6 in boys. In Vietnam, an average of one child is abused every 8 hours". Recently, successive sexual abuse cases have occurred in many provinces and cities throughout the country. Therefore, the project "Empowering People with Disabilities", funded by Caritas Australia (CA) and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) organized a training workshop in "Protecting children from sexual abuse and suggestions for self-protection" for 45 parents who are members of 7 clubs of people with disabilities (PWD) in Gio Linh district.
The members worked together to learn about the current situation of child sexual abuse across the country and local communes, to discuss for better understanding of lewdness, physical and sexual abuse, identity of potential risks and how to prevent and respond in some situations. In addition, the tricks that people often use to approach and abuse children are in great interest of the participants who actively shared through practical examples and handling experience at local areas.
The activity aims to communicate, raise awareness and responsibility of parents as well as the community in proactively preventing and protecting children from the risks of sexual abuse in the locality.
