Communicating climate change awareness in Can Loc district

“Combining communication activities on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation (DRR/CCA) with activities or models is a way to increase the effectiveness of communication and attract people to participate in these activities.”

On 26 March, in Luong Hoi village, Khanh Loc commune, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province, SRD launched a communication campaign on DRR/CCA in 3 communes and 6 villages. The campaign is a part of the project Taking a Value Chains Approach to Improving Livelihoods in the Context of Climate Change and Natural Disasters in Ha Tinh province (VM038). It attracted representatives from 3 commune’s Committee for Flood and Storm Control, 6 village’s Flood and Storm Control Team and many people of Luong Hoi commune.
In this communication campaign, members of the Flood and Storm Control Team said that in recent years, climate change has changed the nature of the disasters affecting the villages. With respect to this it is paramount that people are equipped with the skills and awareness needed to cope with and prevent disasters.
To convey awareness on the effect of climate change adaptation, natural disaster risk management and flood prevention the Flood and Storm Control Team used different techniques: from conducting performances on flood prevention, singing songs composed by the members of the team, making re-enactments to hold Q&A sessions.

One of the adaptation methods they discussed was that of planting trees throughout the community. This brings many benefits for the community, it provides shade, fresh air, shelters inhabitants from wind, dust and noise, and it makes the landscape more visually pleasing. Also, the photosynthesis process produces oxygen, and absorbs carbon dioxide; and hence contributes to global climate change mitigation. To end the event, people planted trees on the campus of Luong Hoi communal culture house.
Furthermore, VM038 project in cooperation with the Flood and Storm Control Teams of 6 villages planted 170 trees in the yards of 6 commune’s culture houses. Members of Flood and Storm Control Team were assigned to protect, look after, and ensure that the trees will grow well; it doesn’t only benefit climate change adaptation, but it also creates a beautiful landscape for local people.
