After more than three years, the Community based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation project, funded by the Australian Agency for International Development and Caritas Australia, came to an end in June 2014. SRD members and local partners were reunited for their final review workshop on the 7 July to discuss the overall program, what have been beneficial, the challenges, lessons learned and follow-up activities after the project ends.
Over the years the project had focus on mapping the problems and needs of local citizens and government in relation to disaster, vulnerability and capacity; building the capacity of the local communities and people; increasing the participation of women in the communities; adapting livelihood models in their development and expansion; documenting and communicating with the stakeholders including media regarding successful models, indigenous experiences and knowledge about community-based disaster risk management; and of course on being able to prevent, respond and rebuild after a disaster. It is through different activities such as training course, seminars and workshops provided by SRD that the local communities had learnt and now have all the tools necessary to face natural disasters.

At the workshop, the representatives of the local partners highly appreciated the project’s support in capacity building for their local staff and citizens and the in-kind support as well. They all viewed project as a remarkable step in response to the natural disasters, and the knowledge, good experience, expertise gained during the project implementation would be continued. As such, they all agreed that they would try to find small funding for the work of the rapid response team. While the women would be continue their communication activities to provide the communes all the information they need. They would continue working together with men, women and people with disabilities through putting everyone’s knowledge and strength as a whole. A participant shared “Thanks to the project, we now have necessary knowledge and tools for continuing the work, response to the natural disaster after the project ends”.
Speaking at the closing, Ms. Hoa – SRD’s Deputy Director expressed her delight as saying “SRD will keep in touch with the communes to see how they will be doing and what will have been done. We are really excited to see how the project will progress and are very confident about the future of it.”
