A Communications Event on No Pesticides Use Week

Nearly 300 students and teachers from Phan Me II Secondary School, with over 500 people who live around the school involved and received information about the event.

On the morning of December 4th, 2015, in accordance with the No Pesticides Use Week (December 3rd to 10th, 2015), the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) organized a communications event at Phan Me II Secondary School, Phan Me Commune, Phu Luong District, Thai Nguyen Province. The event saw the participation of nearly 300 students and teachers and attracted more than 500 people living around the school, representatives of the Phu Luong District Agricultural Extension Station and Agricultural Department, and SRD's project officers. It helped raise awareness of the adverse effects of pesticide use in agricultural production on health and the physical and mental development of people-- especially women and children.

At the event, the skit “My house story”--arranged by the school’s 8th grade students and a teacher-- conveyed vividly and effectively the message “do not overuse pesticides for a green and clean environment”. All students also actively participated in Q&A activity about the harmful effects of using pesticides and environmental-friendly methods to prevent pests.

At the event, Tran Thi Huong, a 7B grade student, shared “today’s event is very fun and I also know more about the effects of toxic pesticides to my health and my family”. Nguyen Huu Hon, a 6B grade student, also shared “my parents have been using pesticides for our family’s tea gardens. But from now on I will remind my parents not to use it to protect our health.” “After this event, I have more knowledge on environmentally-friendly methods to prevent pests such as using pest-eating insects or capturing them by hand. I will persuade my parents to apply these measures to restrict the use of pesticides” shared Tran Thi Mai from 7B grade.

Mrs. Duong Thi Oanh, the school’s principle, made a speech at the event on the status and adverse effects of pesticides. She said: “Nowadays most of the cultivation areas and crops are using over 1000 high toxicity types of pesticides. According to the latest study by the Vietnam National University, there are 15-29 million people regularly exposed to pesticides and about 70% of them have symptoms of poisoning caused by not using protective equipment in production, the improper use of pesticides, eating foods with pesticide residue, etc.”

At the end of event, a representative of the district Agricultural Extension Station shared that this communications activity had a suitable approach for promoting the active participation of students. At the same time, the school’s teachers also appreciated the useful knowledge and detailed sharing of SRD’s project officer.

Since December 3rd, 1998, the Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP) has organized campaigns and activities along with its partners and local community advocates to commemorate the Bhopal disaster in India and raise public awareness on the adverse effects on pesticides.
