Training on Leadership for FIGs’ Leaders-Women VM048, VM046 and VM037

From November 15th – 18th, 2015, in Hanoi, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) organized a training course to equip with knowledge and leadership skills 27 women heads and deputy heads of groups/cooperative groups/clubs (CBOs) from the Phu Luong District, Thai Nguyen Province; Phu Ninh District, Phu Tho Province; and the Van Chan District, Yen Bai Province. The course was part of 3 projects funded by Manos Unidas and Care International and implemented by SRD.
With a participatory approach, the CBOs from SRD's projects were established in order to provide an opportunity for people to participate, share their experiences in production and the common concerns of the community. The operation quality of these CBOs depends largely on the role of leadership in their management. In project activities, SRD always focuses on giving the members of CBOs' management boards not only the technical knowledge, but also leadership knowledge and skills they need to be effective. However, these skills need to be updated and shared constantly to help them plan and develop a long-term strategy for their group.
During the three-day training, all trainees were equipped with leadership skills in areas such as: leadership definition and styles; intrinsic value and personal leadership; anger control; leadership and power; leadership and information management; and leadership and participatory principles. Through seminars/discussions, sharing, and case studies, the training helped trainees gain more knowledge, develop their groups, create dialogue with local leaders, amplify their voice and concerns about policy, and become more involved in community activities and the participatory decision-making process directly related to their livelihoods as well as the lives of all members in the groups/teams they manage.
After the training course, Ms. Dinh Thi Huong from Van Chan district, Yen Bai province shared: "After three days of training, I have learned many skills such as: emotion control, operating an effective meeting and how to listen to other opinions-- even opposite ones. The most impressive thing is that though everyone has different thoughts and circumstances, when we work together as a team, we can bring team spirit, solidarity and a common goal."
Ms. Hau Thi Cuong from the Phu Luong District, Thai Nguyen Province also shared her valuable experience. "Being the head of a village Women's Union, I have participated in several trainings before. But I think this training was really practical and useful. I had the chance to better understand the leadership role of women today, and create successful leadership traits so that I am more confident and able to stay calm in work."
Another review from representatives of the Phu Luong District, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lau, shared what she thought was interesting about the training. "Attending the training were people from different regions, ethnics such as Muong, Kinh, Tay, Thai, and Nung. Whether literate or not, whether rich or poor, we all respect each other's culture and character. Moreover, the training helped me be more motivated to master and apply the knowledge that I have learned in my family and groups."
In the next month, SRD will continue training on leadership skills for heads and deputy-heads of CBOs in the Nghe An Province for the projects in central of Vietnam including the Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri provinces.
