A Training on “Community-Based Pesticide Action Monitoring – CPAM” Applications of PAN AP

The Community-based Pesticide Action Monitoring (CPAM) is a comprehensive programme of the Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific (PAN-AP) that aims to increase awareness and empower local communities. Simultaneously, CPAM delivers valuable documentation for the compelling parallel strategy of networking and advocacy work at the national and international levels. Community monitoring fills the information gap on the impact of pesticides on human health and the environment. Armed with this information, communities are better able to take action.

Recently, PAN-AP has researched and developed an application for smartphones – CPAM App—which can be a useful tool in quickly sharing information gathered from the ground by its partners and documenting pesticide-related issues.

In order to help the network members in the Asia-Pacific to understand and use CPAM App, PAN-AP held a 4-day training course in Penang, Malaysia at the end of August 2015. Two officers of the Centre of Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) attended the training course. This activity is part of the project “Towards a Non Toxic Environment in South East Asia” funded by PAN-AP and implemented in Vietnam by SRD.

After the training, participants will organize CPAM Application training courses for project officers, college students and farmers in the project area in order to promote the updating and sharing of information about chemical pesticides.

The CPAM programme has in fact evolved over a 10 year period. CPAM aims to:

1. To increase awareness among farmers and agricultural workers of the adverse impacts of pesticides on their health and the environment

2.To facilitate the organizing of communities and workers to take action to reduce risks correlated with pesticide use and to adopt ecological agricultural practices

3.To establish the rapid alert response system PQRST (Pesticide Quick Response and Surveillance Team)

4.To document the practices and impact of pesticide use at the local level
