Sharing and Cooperation for the Sustainable Development

Aiming to connect and encourage cooperation between elements of the animal husbandry value chain, on September 5th 2015, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) partnered with the People’s Committee of the Phu Luong District and Agricultural Extension Station to organize the workshop “Building Plans for Interest Groups with the Participation of Governments, Seed and Materials Suppliers and Products Underwriting”. This activity is within the framework of the project “Improving Rural Livelihood and Sustainable Forest Management Through Participatory Land Use Management and Value Chain Approaches” in the Phu Tho and Thai Nguyen Provinces (phase II implemented by SRD and funded by Manos Unidas, Spain).

About 70 farmers attended the workshop, including the People’s Committee Chairman of the Phu Luong district, the Agricultural Extension Station, the Agriculture Division with representatives of the seed and veterinary drug suppliers and some purchasers from three project communes (On Luong, Yen Lac and Dong Dat) and the Phu Luong district. Moreover, the farmers, leaders and representatives in attendance participated actively.

The workshop was organized through the sharing of respective operations and procedures between the stakeholders. The representatives of seven villages summarized their process for breeding and cultivation with the aim of creating clean, safe products. The process begins by using agricultural by-products such as straw, unused vegetables, corn and banana stalks and buffalo, cow and pig dung to feed earthworms. Then, farmers feed the worms directly to chickens, ducks and fish to reduce their dependence on industrial food. This not only helps them to reduce animal husbandry costs, but also to ensure product quality. Finally, the residual worm humus is used to fertilize fields instead of chemical fertilizers.

The suppliers shared their expertise in breeding, caring for and preventing disease in livestock and poultry with the other participants and offered free advice. The purchasing parties shared their criteria and requirements for products as well as their expectations for collaboration with the seven animal husbandry groups from the project communes in attendance. They expressed a need for farmers to be honest in their commitment to product quality and price.

On the part of the government, the relevant department of the Phu Luong District and the project communes, a commitment was made to cooperate more actively with SRD to support farmers in the implementation of a closed-loop, zero-waste agricultural system in order to cultivate a brand synonymous with clean, safe agricultural products.

Looking to the future, the parties have jointly developed a plan to concretize their cooperation and partnership. In late September and early October 2015, SRD and the Agricultural Extension Station will organize a trip for the suppliers and purchasers to investigate the animal husbandry model of the project communes. The parties will also consider organizing a larger, similar workshop in late 2015 or early 2016 with the aim of both creating a stronger connection and promoting, introducing and selling clean agricultural products.
