Timber legality definition's compliance forest protection, development and enrichment are in need in Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen Province

From 28/6 to 2/7/2016, SRD officers and NEPCON-SFMI organization conducted 3 training courses on REDD+ and FLEGT initiatives for 85 trainees such as forest rangers, the small and medium-sized sawmills, forest protection and management team, , forest-dependent households in On Luong, Dong Dat, Yen Lac communes, Phu Luong district. The training course was aimed to helping trainees understand the basic knowledge of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT), which focused on the introduction of legal timber, timber supply chain and traceability.
The course in diversity had a combination between theory and practice. In the first lesson targeted to the forest rangers, the small and medium – sized sawmills, attendants were eager to join when facilitators shared the role of forests in environmental protection. Furthermore, local people paid attention to requirements for timber legality definition. Besides, trainers facilitated a conversation to discuss the current situation of forest protection and development at communal level. The REDD+ and FLEGT video were showed to make participants more excited and easily acquire the knowledge.

After the theory part, facilitators and attendants moved onto practice exercise on mapping, supply chain's analysis, an assessment based on the global wood and wood products flow, as well as wood providing in Viet Nam. The class went to fieldwork in the medium – sized sawmill in Yen Do commune, Phu Luong district. Here, the trainees observed wood working, products made from wood and spent time on exchanging of tools to ensure timber legality with workshop owner. "We are not going to school to only know legal timber that just has invoices and vouchers are sufficient. But now we know that it is more than that, especially ensuring the fire safety steps for sawmills, the compliance of personal protective equipment, social insurance, health care for the workers. All materials are good".

Besides, participants in On Luong, Dong Dat communes who are the members of management board for forest protection and forest growers, they focused on the topic of forests influence on climate change, Legal Compliance on doing the procedures, forms of forest exploitation, tree planting plan, care, protection and enrichment for forest.
After the lessons, the basic knowledge about paper storage which people didn't mind for a long time has been effective transmission. The members of management board for forest protection and households also discussed about reforestation plan with native tree from 2016 to 2017 as well as management and protection.

Before positive-attitude of trainees when they are equipped with necessary knowledge, lecturers were glad to give trainees the Fishing-rod in order to help local people from exploitation to woodworking steps. Centre for Sustainable Rural Development can apply knowledge from this training in the planning, management, protection and development of forests in sustainable communities.
