Within the framework of the project “Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in the agricultural and forestry sector of the north-western highlands” funded by Bread for the World (BftW), Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) in collaboration with Forest Protection and Development (FPD) of Son La province, People’s Committee and FPD of Thuan Chau District, and Son La Sub-Department of Plantation and Plant Protection organized the 2nd Forums on Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES) in 04 communes, namely Muoi Noi, Bon Phang, Nam Lau and Chieng Pha from Sept 19 – 22, 2021. Although these Forums were held off-line by FPD with the support and supervision from a distance (on-line) of SRD in order to strictly comply with the Directive No. 16/2020 of the Prime Minister on Implementation of urgent measures for prevention and control of COVID-19, it witnessed the participation of 145 households, including representatives of forest protection groups and poor/near-poor households (65 households which accounted for 44.8%). Furthermore, there were representatives of Forest Protection and Development Fund of Son La province, Son La Sub-Department of Plantation and Plant Protection, People’s Committee and FPD of Thuan Chau District, representatives of People’s Committees of 04 communes, and reporters and journalists of Son La Television and Radio Station.
These Forums are aimed at providing knowledge of the policy of PFES, payment mechanisms, payment forms as well as payment norms. By attending these Forums, the effective participation and responsibility of people in 04 communes in forest management and protection have been enhanced in order to contribute to reducing forest degradation in the context of tremendous consequences of climate change in Thuan Chau District and other project communes. Additionally, this was an opportunity for villagers to share and exchange information on the difficulties as well as obstacles of PFES.
