Within the framework of the project “Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in the agricultural and forestry sector of the north-western highlands” funded by Bread for the World (BftW), Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) in collaboration with Forest Protection and Development (FPD) of Son La province, People’s Committee and FPD of Thuan Chau District, and Son La Sub-Department of Plantation and Plant Protection organized the 2nd Forums on Community Forest Management (CFM) in 04 communes, namely Muoi Noi, Bon Phang, Nam Lau and Chieng Pha from Sept 15 to 18, 2021. Although these Forums were held virtually with the support and supervision of SRD in order to strictly comply with the Directive No. 16/2020 of the Prime Minister on Implementation of urgent measures for prevention and control of COVID-19, it attracted the participation of 133 households, including representatives of forest protection groups and poor/near-poor households (55 households which accounted for 41.4%). Furthermore, there were representatives of FPD of Son La province, Son La Sub-Department of Plantation and Plant Protection, People’s Committee, and FPD of Thuan Chau District, representatives of People’s Committees of 04 communes, and reporters and journalists from Son La Television and Radio Station.
These Forums are aimed at providing a general view of the policies of community forestry which have been implemented, the plans of sustainable forest management; approaches and methods of forest protection and patrolling. By attending these Forums, the effective participation and responsibility of people in 04 communes have been enhanced in order to reduce forest degradation in the context of tremendous consequences of climate change in Thuan Chau District and other project communes. Additionally, the people in 04 communes had good chances to exchange and share information about the community’s regulations on managing the forest which has been assigned to the villages by the Government. The participants also had chances to use Smartphone applications in community forest patrolling and monitoring. Despite the difficulties, SRD staff and experts have provided representatives of households a detailed instruction for using those applications.
