"Dialogue for Sustainable Forest Development in Vietnam” launching workshop

 

     On the morning of September 23, 2020, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) in collaboration with Quang Tri Forest Protection Department (FPD) and Quang Tri Union of Science and Technology Association for Forest and Biodiversity Protection organized a workshop to launch the project "Dialogue for Sustainable Forest Development in Vietnam”. The project is funded by UNDEF and carried out in three communes of Ba Nang, Huong Hiep and Dakrong in Dakrong district in a two-year period from July 2020 to June 2022. The objective of the project is to enhance regular dialogues between Vietnamese NGOs, CBOs and government agencies to increase transparency and accountability in Vietnam’s forest sector.

      The participants included representatives from Quang Tri Department of Foreign Affairs, Quang Tri Forest Protection Department (FPD) and Quang Tri Union of Science and Technology Association for Forest and Biodiversity Protection, and nearly 50 members from project communes and relevant district agencies.

      Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Vo Dai Loi, Vice Chairman of Dakrong District People's Committee emphasized: “This is an opportunity for the district to develop and for the local people to raise awareness of forest protection and development. On the other hand, through the project, our people will also be able to access and understand better the law and forest change monitoring activities in order to achieve the set objectives of the project prior to replication across the district."

     “The project is very meaningful for not only the beneficial communes but also for the whole district regarding to forest protection” - shared by Mr. H.V.X. - member of the community forest patrol team in Lang Cat village, Dakrong commune. Mr. Le Phuoc, officer of the Forest Protection Department of Dakrong district also expressed: “It is good to have this project with focus on forest protection in Dakrong district and I look forward to its replication into other communes in the district”.

     In the closing speech at the end of the workshop, Mr. Tran Van Ty, Director of Quang Tri Provincial Forest Protection Department, who co-chaired the workshop with Mrs. Vu Thi Bich Hop, Director of SRD kindly requested the relevant CPCs to lead and coordinate their staff and mass association to actively participate in the project activities as its planned progress.

     Mrs. Vu Thi Bich Hop, SRD Director highly appreciated the active participation and commitment of all participants and also affirmed that in addition to building an update monitoring forest change data system by using satellite imageries, the project will connect with others with relevant interventions to maximize its the results and impact at the provincial, national and global level.
