Scoping Study on Stakeholders Participation in Forest Governance to Strengthen Illegal Timber Controls in Lao Cai Province

From January 13th – 17th 2016, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) in collaboration with 2 member organizations of VNGO-FLEGT conducted a scoping study on stakeholders’ participation in forest governance to control illegal timber in Lao Cai Province. The scoping study was deployed at four communes from three districts of Lao Cai Province consisting of: Ban Cam Commune (Bao Thang District), Sa Pa Commune (Sa Pa District), Tan An and Tan Thuong Communes (Van Ban District). These communes have been currently piloting REDD+. This study was a preparation for a main study in early March/2016 with the desire to bring recommendations to the stakeholders, hence contributing effective approach in managing illegal timber and strengthening legal timber compliance in Vietnam.

This study was an activity within the framework of the project “Promoting Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) in South East Asia through proactive Civil Society Organization (CSO) engagement” funded by EU and led by FERN.
