From May 22nd to May23rd 2015, a training workshop on community-based communication on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT) was held in Hanoi. The workshop is under the umbrella project “Promoting FLEGT in Southeast Asia through proactive civil social organizations (CSOs) engagement”(VM051), which is funded by the EU and FERN and implemented by SRD over three years (2014-2016).

In order to support members of the VNGO-FLEGT Network to effectively participate in the VPA process, an important element of FLEGT Action Plan, the project aims to help CSOs and forest-dependent communities increase their awareness of FLEGT through a training course on community-based communication and conduct FLEGT awareness events at the project sites.
Discussion on communication messages
The two-day workshop focused on building knowledge of community-based communication, determining target audiences, developing key messages and communication materials targeted at local communities in project sites .Another aspect of the workshop concentrated on scanning the steps of organizing events to improve the awareness of the locals. During two days, many ideas for key messages and promotional awareness raising products/materials were presented and discussed extensively.
A communication product idea of participants
Key messages that SRD staff and a trainer want to deliver are the need of appropriate methods and understandable messages to effectively convey FLEGT content to communities.
After the workshop, SRD will team up with members of the VNGO-FLEGT Network and the local partners to hold communication events at the project sites to raise awareness of FLEGT.This will also serve as the first step for the community research later.
