On 22nd June, the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) collaborated with Gio Linh District People's Committee (DPC) to organize a final review workshop for the "Empowering people with disabilities_VM054" project, 2nd phase from 2015-2018. The project funded by Caritas Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Attending the workshop were representatives of Gio Linh DPC, Project Steering Committee, representatives of PWDs, parents of CWDs in five project communes and other partners.
After 3 years of implementation, there are 893 direct beneficiaries and 2646 indirect beneficiaries, including adults and children with disabilities and their relatives in five communes of Gio My, Gio Hai, Gio Linh, Trung Hai, Trung Son of Gio Linh district. In particular, five PwD clubs were established and organized meeting every two months with 309 members; three groups of parents of children with disabilities were established with 48 members; four livelihoods groups and over 80 households are supported to improve their livelihoods effectively. In addition, home-based visits were organized and rehabilitation equipment was provided for 60 PWD, in which over 90% have positive changes. In addition, the project also organized communications activities, trainings, etc. to build the capacity of PWDs.
At the workshop, representatives of the Association of PWD, Victims of Agent Orange, PWDs and children's rights protection in Quang Tri Province highly appreciated five achievements of the project, including: (1) the capacity of the Association, of the PwDs and parents of CwDs in five communes have been improved; (2) PwDs have demonstrated their position and role when participating in dialogue forums on the rights of PwDs; many PwDs experienced self-development when participating in the project; (3) Through the project, local authorities have provided support to the clubs and facilitated the club's operation effectively; (4) PwDs club is a successful model and will be developed and scaled up at all levels; (5) Public awareness about the role and positions of PWDs, their participation and contribution to the community is increased.
Similarly, Mr. Duong Duc Hanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Gio Linh district and the leader of Project Steering Committee (PSC) said "The project has contributed to empowering PwDs in five communes in particular and the whole district in general. The project activities have a comprehensive and sustainable impact that contributing to the socio-economic development of the district. District People's Committee will continue to direct the communes to support the operation of the clubs, maintain and develop the results of the project. It is our pleasure to continue a strong and effective cooperation with SRD in implementing the third phase of the project. Despite many changes in the approach, the Steering Committee will support and facilitate with our best conditions to achieve the expected results.

Having her closing speech, Mrs. Nguyen Kim Ngan, Executive Director of SRD emphasized: "After two project phases with more than 6 years, both donors and local partners and beneficiaries highly appreciated the project on its practicality and efficiency on improving the lives of PwDs and their relatives so that they can actively participate in the community. With the results achieved, in the next phase, from June 2018 to June 2022, our donor will continue collaborate with SRD and Gio Linh DPC to implement the project in seven communes, in which two new communes are added. With six years of effective coordination, SRD expects a closer and more effective cooperation with Gio Linh DPC in the coming time."
