Payments for Forest Environmental Services Policy Event and Contest in Tuong Duong District, Nghe An Province

From September 29th to 30th 2015, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), the Nghe An Province's Forest Protection and Development Fund, and the People's Committee of Yen Na commune, Tuong Duong district held a communications event and contest to learn about the payments for forest environmental services in the community.

This activity was supported by the Vietnam Forests and Deltas Project. Participants were officers from the agricultural departments of the Tuong Duong, Ky Son, and Que Phong districts; leaders of the Yen Na commune; and representatives from the management board of Tuong Duong Forest Protection and the Pu Hoat nature reserve.

Dialogue indentifying Payments for Forest Environmental Services policy(PFES)

Through the exchange of lessons and knowledge between the representatives of the Nghe An Forest Protection and Development Fund, the Vietnam Forests and Deltas Project, the forest owners, and the villagers, the local community was able to better understand the payments for forest environmental services policy in order to actively participate in forest protection and development.

After attending this event, Ms. Lo Thi Thom--Xieng Nua village, Yen Na commune, Tuong Duong district—said "I am excited to know more about the payments for forest environmental services policy such as why forest owners like us receive money, who pays for us, and how we should use that money". Mr. Poong Van Quynh--Xieng Nua village, Yen Na commune—said "the visually vibrant poster, the discussion of forest protection and development, and particularly the contest (which included villager participation) helped us better understand the payments for forest environmental services policy and its benefits. They also helped us understand what we should do to protect beautiful and sustainable forests—it includes responsibilities and rights for everybody".

The active part of the event was the contest between four teams representing the villages of the Yen Na commune that participated in PFES. There were quizzes where participants answered questions and received big prizes from organizers. Despite its short duration, the communications event was highly effective in teaching participants about the payments for forest environmental services, villager assigned forest management, and the effective use of the payments, all to improve and enhance their living standard.
