Thua Thien Hue project says yes to clean and green roads, and no to climate change

What would you do for clean streets? The Women’s Club of Van Quat Dong Commune, who have been participating in the Green Streets initiative since June of 2013, have taken an active role in inspiring their community to responsibly manage their waste, prevent disasters and to say “no” to climate change.  In partnership with SRD project, they recently organized a very successful, funny and engaging information event for their commune on waste management and disaster risk.

The waste management component is a part of SRD’s “Community based disaster risk mitigation and climate change adaptation”, funded by Australian aid and Caritas Australia. The project recently provided the means to collect waste in cooperation with the two project communes who will organize the collection.

“Reduce, reuse and recycle” was a key message at the event, which was held on the afternoon of Friday, October 25, 2013. The communication portion of the event was designed to engage local people in thinking how they can best manage their waste. The women’s club organized and modeled the fashions they made out of reused goods such as magazines, bottles, cans and fabric. As they modeled their designs they asked “is this waste?”, showcasing that many items can be reused and remade into something different and exciting. With good humour and creativity, they encouraged and motivate the large audience to think of the various ways they can actively manage their household and business waste.

Local officials also discussed the implementation of the new waste management program, and how it would effect local people and help to improve the local environment of the communes. To help local villagers in their daily waste management efforts, SRD distributed over 100 waste bins to the club members, local people in attendance, and representatives from the five remaining villages. The bins will help to manage waste, and also to keep streets green and clean.

The women’s club also has some members joining the local Rapid Response team for disaster risk reduction and management. To communicate about disaster prevention, they acted out a short performance on disaster issues. The play centered on a man who came home a little drunk to his family, when a typhoon hits. The family, concerned for their well-being, calls in the Rapid Response team for help, and they get through the storm unharmed. Afterwards, the rapid response team and the family discuss what they can do better next time to prevent a storm. The play got big laughs, but also encouraged the audience to continue to be vigilant about disaster prevention and preparation.

The event was a successful showcase of local people and women taking on a leadership role in local projects. SRD was a happy partner in this initiative, in which a local building was filled to capacity to watch the performances and learn more about “saying no to climate change and waste”, and saying yes to a green, clean and healthier local environment.
