SRD attended a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Climate Justice in Ireland

The Government of Ireland and the Mary Robinson Foundation-Climate Justice successfully co-hosted the Conference on Hunger – Nutrition – Climate Justice 2013: A New Dialogue: Putting People at the Heart of Global Development, Dublin 15-16 April. Together, with delegates from 100 developing countries, The Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD)- a delegate of Vietnam's CSOs, actively participated in the conference and shared the stories as well as realities of Vietnam’s poor communities struggling against hunger, malnutrition and climate change during  thematic discussions.

This conference opened a new dialogue and debate on the linked challenges of hunger, nutrition and climate justice. It encouraged and inspired innovative thinking and solutions, brought together policymakers and global thought leaders with local people and practitioners who face the realities of rising food prices, failed crops, under- nutrition, increasingly erratic weather patterns and voicelessness. Approximately 100 developing country delegates brought their community’s experiences to share with 200 political representatives, policy makers, and delegates from civil society, the private sector, advocacy groups and research institutions. In this way, the Conference enhanced the voices of those most affected by climate change in developing countries. The Conference explored the links between hunger, nutrition and climate justice using six target ‘lenses’ to focus discussions and help identify key messages. These lenses were:  Risks, Rights, Empowerment, Integrated approaches and the concept of making the Local National. The conference publication included thematic papers focusing on issues through each of the lenses, followed by relevant case studies that illustrate the interconnected causes and the integrated nature of potential solutions to development challenges.

The Conference took place at a critical juncture in global development. The international community is currently reviewing the progress of the Millennium Development Goals - two years before the target date for their achievement. Policy discussions on the Sustainable Development Goals and the post- 2015 framework for international development have also been instigated. By inviting local practitioners, farmers’ organisation representatives and vulnerable households, they were given an opportunity to tell their stories to key international policymakers, the conference took an important step in enabling these voices to influence new international development strategies, while also ensuring that the linkages between hunger, nutrition and climate justice are reflected in future policy decisions.
