SRD happily celebrates its 5th anniversary

On 29th March 2011, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) happily held the 5th anniversary of the organization with the full participation of the umbrella organization, donors, embassies, international organizations, governmental agencies, international NGOs and Vietnamese NGOs, local partners, beneficiaries and media in Hanoi.

Being established in 2006, the organization was firstly comprised of 10 staff previously working for the International Cooperation for Development and Solidarity (CIDSE), an international non-governmental organization working in the development sector that had finished its program in Vietnam after 30 years of operation.

Over the past five years, SRD has made a long step forward with 36 different projects implemented in the northern (Bac Kan, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Yen Bai) and central (Thua Thien Hue) provinces. In 2010, SRD likewise conducted research in Dien Buien, Lao Cai, Quang Ninh and Hoa Binh province in order to expand its project cover. The number of direct and indirect beneficiaries of SRD’s projects reached over 100,000 people including mostly poor farmers, women and ethnic minorities. The approved budget for projects of SRD has been likewise increased every year. From 2006 to date, SRD has received more than 4 million US dollars from donors including Manos Unidas (Spain), Caritas Australia (Australia), Cordaid (Netherlands), Oxfam America, Embassy of Finland, Misereor (Germany) and Care International, etc. Thanks to the meaningful contribution to the poverty reduction in Vietnam, SRD was awarded the certification by Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), the umbrella organization.

In the cozy atmosphere of the celebration, the participants expressed their admiration of SRD works and achievements over the last five years. “Five years is not a very long time but SRD has proven itself as an extraordinary organization among the 300 member organization of VUSTA.”, said Prof. Ho Uy Liem, Vice President of VUSTA.

SRD staff was extremely proud and pleased of the success of the anniversary. It is a huge milestone that encourages us to continue our mission of supporting the community’s development.
