Capacity Building Training for VNGO-EVFTA Network Members

After the kick-off meeting on 16 November, the VNGO-EVFTA network has started a series of capacity building activities. On 27 November, in collaboration with the Vietnam Forest Owner Association (VIFORA), SRD organized a training course for members from Northern Vietnam. The session welcomes participants from state agencies, international organizations, businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Solidarity, one of the messages that were set out when forming the VNGO-EVFTA network, was emphasized through the opening speech delivered by Mrs Vu Thi Bich Hop - Director of SRD.

Also, the opening remark from Mr Nguyen Ba Ngai - Member of SRD’s Board of Trustee, Vice Chairman of VIFORA, and Mr Nguyen Phu Hung - Deputy Director of SRD cum EVFTA Project Manager - summarized the purpose of the training and the necessity of EVFTA for the forestry sectors in Vietnam.

At the training session, participants listened to presentations from Mrs Nguyen Thuy Linh from the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Mr Nguyen Thi from the Legal Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The two speakers have provided useful information on the impact and importance of EVFTA to Vietnam's agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors as well as the mandatory commitments in EVFTA on the environment and sustainable development. Thereby, participants have a deeper understanding of the issues related to the environment and forestry sector in EVFTA as well as the implementation plan for the agreement of state agencies.

Participants had the opportunity to discuss with the presenters, asking questions and exchanging different view.

Mrs Perrine Fournier, FERN representative, has explained the importance of EVFTA to forest governance and the ways that civil society organizations(CSOs) can participate, which she had gained experience from many countries around the world.

The last presentation of the training session was from Mrs Nguyen Thi Thu Trang - Director of Centre for WTO and Integration - Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). Thanks to her talk, participants had a chance to know more about noteworthy issues on the EVFTA implementation, as well as the important role played by CSOs in this process.

The training course was concluded by Mrs Vu Thi Bich Hop. The VNGO-EVFTA network promises to implement practical activities in the near future, along with capacity building for its members.
