MUI CA MAU NATIONAL PARK’S TWO-STAGE SHRIMP MODEL HELPS VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES BECOME MORE CLIMATE CHANGE-RESPONSIBLE

The Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) is running the project "Climate protection and mangroves integrated with income enhancement for vulnerable communities (VM069)" in Mui Ca Mau National Park. Tam Giang PFMB of Ca Mau province to enhance climate resilience, enhance carbon sequestration, develop mangrove forests, strengthen biodiversity protection, and ensure biodiversity sustainable and socially inclusive design for underprivileged and vulnerable communities in the Mekong Delta.

The influence of climate change is growing, impacting temperature, rainfall, sunlight, storm surge, and changes in sea level, as the weather, sunshine, and rain have gotten more and more unpredictable in recent years. These circumstances altered, resulting in adjustments to the marine environment, unpredictable seasons, and a severe decline in the output of shrimp and crab. Additionally, households frequently store shrimp and crabs based on their knowledge and the methods imparted to them by earlier generations. It gets harder and harder since they haven't been trained or taught merely methodically.

The Ca Mau Provincial Women's Union, Ca Mau Cape National Park, and Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have collaborated with the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) to implement the Model after realizing the urgency of the aforementioned issue. Mangroves are used for two stages of shrimp aquaculture for local homes near Mui Ca Mau National Park. These are homes that are at risk from climate change.

Local people were introduced, guided, and installed nursery tanks

The locals constructed a nursery tank in accordance with technical requirements with the aid of the project and professionals. Attend training sessions to learn about the model, its requirements, and implementation methods. Experts and NP staff teach students step-by-step to master the skill at each stage in person and in practice.

Students had the chance to visit shrimp hatcheries in Khanh An Commune, U Minh District, and Tan Xuyen Ward, Ca Mau City, as part of the theoretical and practice-heavy sessions. Learn about issues including designing a shrimp hatchery, building shrimp nursery tanks, raising shrimp in a nursery tank, improving the farming square, choosing and stocking kinds, caring for and managing the water environment, and utilizing certain supplies. How to protect shrimp against some infections.

Up to this point, the nursery tank has completed two periods of shrimp rearing, raising 200,000 shrimp each time. 133,100 animals were collected in the first phase, with a survival rate of 66.55%; 167,000 heads were obtained in the second phase, with a survival rate of 83.5%. The total number of animals reared throughout two sessions was 300,100, with a survival rate of 75%. The shrimp developed quickly, uniformly, and healthily over both raising periods.

This seed shrimp has a known origin, consistent quality, and a bigger size than seeds that have never been nursed. After receiving the handover, the households were supplied in the natural setting, beneath the mangrove canopy.

Most of the families who got shrimp seed were overjoyed to get shrimp that was enormous in size, stable in growth, and able to fulfill their hopes of harvesting shrimp this Lunar New Year.

Due to the epidemic scenario, supporting a portion of the seed from the aforementioned initiative is imperative for the people because the quality of specific seed sources is not assured, and the origin is unknown. Not only does this activity increase household income and production security, but it also helps the Mui Ca Mau National Park forest stand be better managed and protected. Project VM069 will continue to support some households in the Con Mui and Mui hamlets, Dat Mui commune, with improved 2-stage extensive breeding of shrimps like mantis shrimp, grouper, and black tiger shrimp to help improve the income for vulnerable communities being implemented in the project area.

This type of production organization is based in the community, adheres to the scientific method, supports, unites, and draws on experience in livelihood development, and enhances the community's capacity to adapt to climate change. The populace in this.
