Rural Waste Management training in Hai Duong and Huong Phong

On May 25th and 26th, the representatives of SRD’s Hue office together with the trainer facilitated two training sessions on Waste Management in Rural Areas in the communities of Hai Duong and Huong Phong. This training is part of the Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation project (CBDRR-CCA). The current methods that are used to dispose of waste are not only bad for the environment and climate change, but are also affecting negatively the livelihoods of the populations in those rural areas.

Even though the workshop had already been given in those communities once before, most of the participants were attending this event for the first time. Women were very well represented during this training with 23 and 19 in the 2 groups. 5 of the participants were men.

Through very interactive activities including the showing of videos, group discussions on the pros and cons of burning garbage and climate change, demonstrations on dividing waste and making fertilizer, and even singing, the participants were able to acquire relevant and useful knowledge on how to initiate Waste Management in their communities.

According to one of the facilitators of the training “people seem very happy to be here”. That statement can be validated. During the sessions, the level of participation was very high and in both groups, everybody seemed to be considering the topic with urgency.

At the end of the training, each participant left with information booklets and material to start implementing good and efficient Waste Management practices.
