SRD Designing Gender Mainstreaming Guideline

Within the scope of the “Support for the engagement of ethnic minorities in socio-economic development plan 2013-2015” project coded as VM046 that falls under the CASI 3 program funded by Care, Denmark, SRD made its gender statement in 2014. As part of adhering to the statement, a task force of SRD designed a gender mainstreaming guidline between June 29th and 30th 2015 with the technical support of Mr Truong Quang Hong, a gender expert from Care in Vietnam.

The contents of the gender mainstreaming guideline were built in detail and are relevant to facets of each of SRD’s activities. These include project management and implementation, communication and human resources.Under the expert guidance, the SRD staff responsible for the guideline design analyzed steps taken in each field of activity in detail thereby building suitable gender mainstreaming content. The goal of the given gender mainstreaming approach is to ensure that all women and men participating in SRD’s activities have equal rights to access information and support. Furthermore, if the gender mainstreaming works, it will contribute to reducing gender stereotypes that have shown to have different impacts on conceptions of gender roles in the family and the community. The gender mainstreaming hierarchy proposed in the guideline ranges from gender sensitive, to gender responsive and to gender transformative.

At the same time, the practical experience of Mr. Truong Quang Hong helped the participating SRD staff strengthen their knowledge on gender and gender mainstreaming which will gradually improve the quality and efficiency of gender mainstreaming in SRD’s activities going forward.

The next phase of development for the gender mainstreaming guideline will see it being edited by and given commentary from SRD’s leadership and other staff members in order for it to be completed as an official document. The organizational gender mainstreaming guideline is expected to be published on August 1st, 2015.
