Vietnam Forests and Deltas Program (VFD Program), funded by US Agency for International Development (USAID) (2013 – 2018), has been implemented by MARD with technical support from Winrock International, Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), American Red Cross (ARC), Vietnam Red Cross (VNRC) and the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD). Within the framework of the VFD Program, on 9th February 2015, SRD organized the workshop “Training needs assessment for community agricultural extension technicians” in Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province. The workshop attracted the participation of 26 village and communal agricultural extension technicians in the communes of Xuan Chinh, Xuan Le and Van Xuan in Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province.
The workshop’s purpose was to assess the needs of training on System of Rice Intensification (SRI), rice variety assessment and Farmer Field School (FFS) for the community agricultural extension technicians in order to ensure that Training of Trainers (ToT) courses for 26 village and communal agricultural extension technicians, which will be synchronized with the growth stages of rice plants in Spring crop from February to June 2015, will be suitable for the capacity of the agricultural extension technicians and local conditions of mountainous districts in Thanh Hoa province. At the same time, the workshop aimed at organize the production of ToT manual, which will be used for training farmers of community technicians) ensuring the entire “Vareity assessment, FFS and SRI” contents of the manual will be fully compiled with high accuracy and illustrated by photos of the ToT training. It’s expected that the manual will be disseminated in other project sites of the VFD Program.

At the workshop, after filling out training need assessment form, the participants divided into groups discussing about the challenges of local rice production. According to that, the participants proposed the solution orientation as well as gave the recommendations improving the training methods and identified the training contents and guided farmers more effectively next time.

The collected information as well as the recommendations and ideas of agricultural extension technicians are important input for the VFD program when developing the ToT training curriculum and material on SRI, rice variety assessment and FFS for the agricultural extension technicians.
