SRD - Centre for Sustainable Rural Development

Our Approach & Other Projects

Climate change, gender equality, rights for people living with disability and policy advocacy are issues considered and integrated into all of SRD’s projects. With a focus on community participation in developing, leading and implementing projects, we strive to ensure that the true needs of communities are being met, and that positive changes are sustained over the long term.

A range of measures are taken to ensure high levels of engagement and participation from women at focus groups, workshops, consultations and training of trainer courses. Women are supported and encouraged to be active members of Project Management Boards, and take strong leadership positions in project activities. The principles of the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and CEDAW human rights agreement, are the guide for all of our gender equality activity.

The impact of climate change is a major consideration in all of our projects. Our sustainable agriculture projects integrate climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, ensuring that improved agricultural and livelihood models are sustainable in the long term. For more information about climate change integration click here, and for information about our policy advocacy work, click here.

Equal access and participation for people living with a disability is integrated into SRD’s projects. We also have a small number of specific interventions that specifically support those affected by disability, including Support to people with disabilities in Thua Thien Hue (2009 – 2011) and Supporting adults and children with disabilities in Gio Linh District, Quang Tri Province (2012 -2014).

SRD supports poor rural communities to sustainably manage their own livelihoods, and increasingly to respond to the impacts of climate change on their lives and communities. In light of this, SRD sees it as important to manage our operations in a way that also contributes to our mission, and is in line with the high degree of integrity we strive for in all of our work. As a leading Science and technology organization in Vietnam, we believe it is important to have strong internal sustainability practices.

SRD has developed a Green Office program which brings together practical actions that we can undertake around the office to reduce our impact on the environment and our contribution to climate change. SRD's Green Office Guide was developed through consultation with management and all staff members, and launched at an all staff working in April 2012.
