An camp on the Vietnamese Day of People with Disabilities – April 18

In the framework of the "Empowering People with Disabilities in Gio Linh District, Quang Tri Province" project (funded by Caritas Australia through SRD), a camp celebrating the Vietnamese Day of People with Disabilities (PwDs) was held on the beach of Gio Hai Commune, Gio Linh District in April 18, 2016. The Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) in partnership with Quang Tri Province's Association of PwDs and the project Steering Committee of the district and PwD Clubs at the commune level organized this event.

The camp attracted the participation of more than 220 PwDs and their families from five PwD Clubs in five communes: Trung Son, Trung Hai, Gio My, Gio Hai and Gio Linh town. Representatives of Quang Tri province's Association of PWDs and Gio Linh district's Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs department and People's Committee in the project communes also attended the event.

There were many activities undertaken including communications for PwD's rights and related laws, entertainment activities, etc. The camp was started with the emotional and meaningful opening speech of a representative of PwDs. After that, the representatives of the province's Association of PwDs and the district's Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs department shared essential knowledge about rights, mechanism and policy, and laws involving to PwDs, then answered some participants' questions on these issues. As well as this, fun games and performances played by PwDs created a relaxed and warm atmosphere at the camp.

The camp brought about a PwD's meaningful and joyful day. "Joining the camp, I gained a lot of useful information. I also met friends from other Clubs for the first time. We had a happy time of talking and sharing together. The atmosphere was such pleasant, cosy and friendly. How a meaningful day!" - shared by Mr Le Huu Chien, one member from Trung Son Commune's PwD Club.
