KICK-OFF CEREMONY AND BASELINE SURVEY OF THE PROJECT “MANGROVE AND CLIMATE PROTECTION COMBINED WITH INCOME GENERATION FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES - Code: VM069"
On April 26th, 2021, the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Women's Union of Ca Mau province, held a launching ceremony of the project “Mangrove and climate protection combined with income generation for vulnerable communities - code VM069”.
The goal of the project is to increase the carbon accumulation of mangroves through efforts of forest conservation and development, livelihood improvement for poor and vulnerable communities living in mangroves, without compromising the protection of the environment and mangroves, to integrate into national and provincial policies regarding climatic protections in the mangroves-a unique but vulnerable ecosystem.
This is a non-refundable foreign aid project sponsored by the Bread for the World of Germany with a total budget of 800,000 EUR. The project will be implemented in 3 years starting from April 2021 and will be implemented in the Dat Mui commune of Mui Ca Mau National Park and Tam Giang Dong commune under Tam Giang Protection Forest Management Board.
The ceremony was honored to welcome: Professor, Dr. Pham Van Dien, Deputy Director of Vietnam General Department of Forestry, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ba Ngai - Vice Chairman of Vietnam Forest Owners Association, Mr. Tran Van Thuc - Deputy Director of Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Tran Thi Kieu Yen - Chairman of Ca Mau Province Women's Union, and representatives of departments, branches of Ca Mau province, leaders, and officials of Mui Ca Mau National Park, People's Committee of Nam Can district, Tam Giang protection forest management board, representatives of project communes attended. On the side of the SRD, there were the attendance of Mrs. Vu Thi Bich Hop - Executive director, with the project manager, consultant, and VM069 project staff.
When the project is put into operation in coastal mangroves, it will support 02 forest management units in conserving forest and marine resources, improving the adaptive capacity, and climate change mitigation. From that, creating a favorable condition for the communities living near the mangrove forest to change the career and improve livelihood through efficient production models that are proper with the coastal region's natural condition.
TRAINING FOR BASELINE SURVEY AT MUI CA MAU NATIONAL PARK
“Mangroves not only have above-ground biomass, but below-ground biomass plays a very important role. According to scientists, the underground biomass of the mangrove forest accounts for about two-thirds of the total biomass of the forest, thus the Ca Mau mangrove forest will be among the objects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the coming time" said Ph.D. Nguyen Phu Hung, Mangrove Expert
Ca Mau province currently has about 60,000 hectares of mangroves, which not only have socio-economic value, ecotourism but also a large carbon sink, significantly contributing to reducing the concentration of the greenhouse effect. The assessment of mangrove carbon sequestration and retention is intended to provide a scientific basis for state management of greenhouse gas emissions reduction, mangrove conservation, and development, and provide information for international negotiation on greenhouse gas reduction implementation programs. Therefore, it is very necessary for organizations, scientists, and experts to research and calculate the existing forest carbon stocks so that Ca Mau province will sell carbon to companies and enterprises that pollute the environment. The revenue from selling carbon will be additionally supported in forest management, protection and development, and improved livelihoods for people in the mangrove area./.
