Promoting Community Voice on Climate Change

On December 21st, in Hanoi, the Network of Vietnamese Non-Governmental Organizations and Climate Change (VNGO&CC) held a final project workshop for the project "Strengthening the role of Vietnamese NGOs in climate change communications and policy advocacy".

Giving a speech at the workshop, Mrs. Vu Thi Bich Hop – Executive Director of the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) - confirmed that the position of the NGOs on Climate Change have been raised, particularly in the participation with the government authorities in the consultation process. This has allowed policy development closer to reality, in accordance with the needs and legitimate interests of people.

According to the independent evaluation unit of the project, compared to the time before the project implementation, the VNGOs have demonstrated their role by contributing the strong voice of vulnerable communities into policy advocacy on climate change. Activities in recent years mainly focused on helping people improve their livelihoods consistent with conditions of each area, contributing to reducing greenhouse gases, environmental pollution and bringing high economic efficiency. In particular, the relationship of these organizations with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and other ministries was closer, allowing them to promptly inform ministries of the urgent problems and needs before negative influences.

At the workshop, the Network VNGO&CC also elected its Steering Committee members for the period of 2016-2018, including 06 NGOs from the North, the Centre and the South regions. Mrs Vu Thi Bich Hop - SRD Director – was reelected to continue as the Chair of the Steering Committee.

During the 2016-2020 period, the network will focus on the development of the organizations in regional areas and expand access to those who are vulnerable, such as ethnic minorities and people in remote and isolated areas, etc. At the same time, efforts will be made to further empower the network by integrating with media organizations, linked to the government authorities.
