Vietnam exports wood and wood products (W&WP) to 160 countries and territories. The European Union (EU), which includes 27 countries, is an important W&WP consumption market, ranking at the 5th place (MARD, 2020). In 2021, W&WP export turnover to this market reached 597.76 million USD, accounting for 4.2% of the country’s total W&WP export turnover, up to 11.4% compared to 2020 (Viet Wood, 2022). Many factors had lead to the use of domestic plantation wood to supply raw wood, reducing production costs, and limiting risks for exporting W&WP: the covid pandemic rised inflation in many countries and escalated world gasoline prices; the impact of military conflicts between some countries has increased freight rates, reduced purchasing power, increased inventory and caused many orders to be canceled or prolonged, causing difficulties for businesses. The supply of domestic plantation wood for processing W&WP for export in general and export to the EU market in particular has not met the requirements of types, quantity, quality and control of the legal wood origin (VIFORA - SRD, 2021-2022). In order to supply domestic plantation wood for processing W&WP to the EU market, the research group underlines the necessity to develop policy solutions for domestic plantation wood, in order to ensure the type, quantity, quality and meet the requirements of legal wood origin.
